This page contains definitions and links to concepts that are important to me. They may have crystallised my own thinking or sum up ideas that I find are often overlooked. If I first found the definition on a particular website, that website will be included in brackets. I’ll add new ones as I discover them.

The Correspondence Theory of Truth

  • A thing is true if it corresponds to that which exists in the external world (Atheist Watch). See also here, here and here.

Day Care Sex Abuse Hysteria

  • Day care sex abuse hysteria occurred in the 1980s and early 1990s. This occurred mainly in the United States, with some cases in Canada and New Zealand.

Forer Effect

  • “The observation that individuals will give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people.”

Naturalism

  • The belief that all things can be explain in terms of natural phenomena (Atheist Watch). See also here.

Parsimony

  • The least complex explanation is likely to be the most correct (Atheist Watch).

Postdiction

  • “An effect of hindsight bias that explains claimed predictions of significant events, such as plane crashes and natural disasters.”
